The Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday officially welcomed 14,893 new students into the institution, cautioning them to steer clear of cultism, exam malpractice and other vices as they begin their academic journey.
Addressing the freshers during the 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony at the Ojo main campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, said the university would “decisively deal with anyone found culpable” of cultism or misconduct.
She urged the newly admitted students to take their studies seriously, attend classes regularly and choose their friends wisely.
“Bad friends destroy good habits, and LASU has zero tolerance for cultism,” she warned, advising the freshers to avoid indecent dressing, hooliganism, corruption and all forms of deviant behaviour.
The VC described the matriculating students as “fortunate,” noting that they were selected from more than 70,000 applicants.
“You must count yourselves very lucky to be among the few admitted,” she said, congratulating their families for supporting their educational dreams.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello assured the students of the university’s commitment to their safety, revealing that LASU has put in place adequate security and encourages students to report suspicious activities.
She emphasised LASU’s dedication to character development and its zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, adding that the school had set up a Directorate to handle such issues.
“Do not keep silent when you are harassed. If you see something, say something,” she said.
