The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, has inaugurated the institution’s new College of Law, describing it as a strategic intervention aimed at addressing critical gaps in Nigeria’s legal education system and restoring dignity to the legal profession.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony held on February 12, 2026, Oyedepo said the establishment of the College of Law reflects the university’s commitment to strengthening jurisprudence and raising professional standards in the country.
He recalled the university’s journey since it was licensed on February 12, 2002, noting its transformation from what critics once dismissed as a “glorified secondary school” into one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary institutions. According to him, the university’s academic strides have been reinforced by recognitions such as its recent ranking as Nigeria’s top institution in the QS Sustainability Rankings, as well as the high employability rate of its graduates.
“As we open this new chapter, we do so with confidence, because God has always gone ahead of us,” Oyedepo said, adding that construction of the College of Law would commence immediately after the ceremony. He also disclosed that a groundbreaking ceremony for the College of Medicine would be held later in the month.
In her remarks, the Pro-Chancellor, Pastor (Mrs.) Faith Oyedepo, described the event as a fulfilment of the university’s declared year of “Open Doors,” noting the symbolic significance of February 12, which marks the anniversary of the institution’s approval in 2002.
Secretary of the Board of Regents, Barrister Banji Baruwa, said the development was divinely inspired and expressed optimism that the College of Law would rank among the best in Nigeria and beyond.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Timothy Anake, described the inauguration as the dawn of a transformative era in legal education at the university. He expressed confidence that the College would produce a new generation of outstanding legal practitioners and commended the Chancellor and the Board of Regents for their leadership.
The ceremony marks another milestone in the university’s ongoing expansion drive and commitment to academic excellence and leadership development.
