The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the Procurement Compliance Monitoring System (PICOMS), a digital platform aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in procurement processes within the nation’s education sector.
The initiative was announced by the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a capacity-building session for procurement officers held at the auditorium of the National Universities Commission in Abuja.
According to the minister, delays in procurement procedures have often slowed the implementation of major education projects due to incomplete documentation, weak submissions, and procedural lapses. He emphasized that improving procurement compliance is critical to ensuring timely delivery of projects and proper management of public resources.
To tackle these challenges, the Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria deployed PICOMS as an electronic system that enables real-time tracking of procurement submissions, streamlines documentation processes, and reduces approval timelines across the ministry, its agencies, commissions, parastatals, and tertiary institutions.
Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Adebowale Adebukola Adedokun, noted that procurement processes often suffer setbacks due to incomplete documentation and weak submissions, stressing the need for stronger compliance mechanisms.
The ministry reiterated that the new system forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen transparency, promote accountability, and ensure efficient delivery of education sector projects.
