A student of the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering at the University of Lagos, Okeke Johnpaul Ebubechukwu, has gained continental recognition at the 2026 Artificial Intelligence and Antimicrobial Resistance (AI & AMR) Symposium held in Kampala, Uganda.
The symposium, hosted by the African Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences at Makerere University, took place from March 16 to 17, 2026. It attracted researchers, innovators, and scholars from across Africa and beyond, focusing on the application of artificial intelligence in addressing public health challenges, particularly antimicrobial resistance.
Okeke presented a research project titled “AMRScan: A Large Language Model Framework for Real-Time Synthesis of Global Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Emerging Threat Detection.” The project ranked among the top seven percent of over 600 submissions, underscoring its originality, technical depth, and global relevance.
In a highly competitive field, the UNILAG student also secured second place in the Best Poster Presentation category, marking a significant academic milestone.
The achievement highlights the growing contribution of University of Lagos students to cutting-edge research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and global health, further reinforcing the institution’s reputation for academic excellence and innovation.
