A 500-level student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked concerns about student health monitoring and emergency response systems in higher institutions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university confirmed that the student had actively participated in the training before stepping aside due to complaints of leg pain and fatigue.
Shortly after leaving the pitch, teammates reportedly noticed he was gasping for breath, prompting an immediate emergency response. He was rushed to the university’s Medical Centre, located near the training ground, where medical personnel began resuscitation efforts using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.
The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the late student as diligent and vibrant, noting that his death is a significant loss to the university community.
According to preliminary findings, the incident may have been caused by a previously undisclosed heart condition.
The university maintained that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, emphasizing that all necessary emergency equipment was available and properly utilised.
It also stated that members of the university management have remained in contact with the bereaved family and continue to offer support during this difficult time.
The institution extended its condolences, acknowledging that the loss has left the entire campus community in mourning.
