The tragic killing of a Nigerian teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of educators across the country, as advocacy group Let There Be Teachers condemned the incident and described it as an “education emergency.”
In a strongly worded statement signed by its Convener, Oluwaseyi Anifowose, the organisation expressed grief, anger, and concern over the death of Oyedokun, whom it described as a dedicated educator committed to shaping the future of Nigerian children.
“A teacher has been killed. A classroom has been silenced. A nation must not look away,” the statement read.
The group lamented that teachers across Nigeria continue to work under dangerous conditions marked by insecurity, poor welfare, and neglect, yet remain committed to educating children despite the risks.
“Mr Michael Oyedokun was not a statistic. He was not a headline. He was a human being: a teacher, a nation builder,” the statement added.
Let There Be Teachers said the incident highlights the growing dangers faced by educators nationwide and questioned how many more teachers must lose their lives before the safety of teachers becomes a national priority.
The organisation called on government authorities, security agencies, education stakeholders, and Nigerians at large to move beyond condolences and take urgent steps to protect teachers and schools from insecurity.
According to the group, the killing of educators should no longer be viewed solely as a security challenge, but as a threat to the future of education in Nigeria.
The advocacy group also extended condolences to the family, colleagues, and students of the late Oyedokun, while pledging to continue speaking out for the safety, dignity, and welfare of teachers.
“To every teacher we have lost to insecurity: we see you, we honour you, and we will remember you,” the statement concluded.
The death of Mr. Michael Oyedokun has further intensified conversations around the vulnerability of teachers in conflict-prone and underserved communities across Nigeria.
