The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya, in partnership with the ICT Authority, is set to roll out a nationwide digital literacy training programme targeting 62,565 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers across the country.
The initiative, which forms part of the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), is aimed at strengthening the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and improving learning outcomes under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.
According to the implementation schedule, the Training of Trainers (ToTs) began on Friday and will run until June 23, 2026. The main teacher training sessions are expected to take place from June 24 to June 26, 2026, following content development completed between May 26 and May 30, 2026.
The programme will reach teachers in 20,855 schools across all 47 counties in Kenya. Each participating school is expected to nominate three teachers, including educators handling learners with special needs.
A total of 3,754 Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) have been selected to facilitate the exercise. These include Curriculum Support Officers, ICT Champion Teachers, TSC Sub-County Directors, and teacher educators drawn from institutions such as Kibabii, Lugari, and Kagumo Teacher Training Colleges.
Officials explained that the training will be delivered through a cascade model designed to ensure wider reach and effective knowledge transfer across the education system.
Expected outcomes include improved digital lesson planning and delivery, better integration of ICT into classroom teaching, enhanced learner engagement, and overall improved academic performance.
Regional and county education directors have been tasked with nominating participants, selecting training centres, ensuring fair distribution of trainees, and monitoring implementation across their jurisdictions.
County allocations show varying participation levels, with Kakamega County recording the highest numbers at 868 schools and 2,604 teachers, supported by 156 trainers. Nakuru County will train 2,121 teachers from 707 schools, while Garissa County will benefit 396 teachers drawn from 132 schools.
The programme is part of ongoing efforts by the Kenyan government to accelerate digital transformation in education and strengthen teacher capacity for modern classroom delivery.
