The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Banjul Satellite Campus has been officially launched at a ceremony held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo.
The launch event brought together government representatives, education stakeholders, development partners, university officials and members of the academic community to mark what is described as a major milestone in strengthening science, technology and innovation in The Gambia.
The new campus is expected to enhance access to advanced training in mathematical sciences, data science and artificial intelligence, while also promoting research, innovation and problem-solving aligned with national development priorities.
The event also coincided with Science Week activities, including robotics competitions and science outreach programmes aimed at encouraging young people to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Speakers highlighted the importance of investing in knowledge and building strong human capital to prepare young people for a rapidly evolving global economy. The initiative is also expected to strengthen collaboration between local universities, research institutions and international academic partners.
The Banjul Satellite Campus will be hosted at the former School of Journalism Kanifing Campus. It will support postgraduate training, capacity building for educators, and applied research in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and data science.
The campus is also envisioned as a regional centre for excellence in advanced learning, innovation and entrepreneurship, contributing to both national and continental scientific development.
