Nigerian football legend Augustine Azuka Okocha, popularly known as Jay-Jay Okocha, has revealed the childhood story behind the nickname that later became synonymous with his illustrious football career.
Okocha explained that the name originated from his neighbourhood football days, where he played alongside his brothers and several other boys who shared the name Austin.
Speaking during an appearance on the ObiOne podcast, the former Super Eagles captain said the similarity in names made it difficult for people to distinguish between the Austins.
«“It started in the neighbourhood where we grew up. All of us were footballers; we were just on the street playing, and my two brothers played as well.”»
According to Okocha, his friends initially referred to him as “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother” to differentiate him from the other boys named Austin. The shortened version, “Jay-Jay”, eventually stuck.
He added that the nickname became even more convenient when he travelled abroad, as some people found it difficult to pronounce his given name, Augustine.
“When I travelled, some people struggled to pronounce my name, Augustine, so Jay-Jay was a lot easier. I decided to adopt the name and put it in my passport. I still pay royalties to my brother,” he said.
Okocha’s full name is Augustine Azuka Okocha, but Jay-Jay became the identity through which he achieved global recognition.
The former Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe midfielder is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers, celebrated for his exceptional dribbling, creativity, flair and technical ability.
His nickname has remained inseparable from his legacy, long after his retirement from professional football.
