Decisions shaping Nigeria’s universities often begin far from lecture halls, but they eventually determine what students experience in classrooms, examinations, and even the value of their degrees after graduation.
That larger system now has a familiar UNILAG figure at a key decision-making point.
President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment was announced on Monday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Ogundipe takes over from Emeritus Prof. Olufemi Aina, who was appointed in July 2025 but stepped down less than a year into the role.
According to the statement, the appointment is aimed at strengthening quality assurance, access, funding direction, and global competitiveness in Nigeria’s university system.
“The appointment is aimed at advancing quality, access, and integrity in the
education sector,” the statement read.
President Tinubu also expressed confidence that the former UNILAG Vice-Chancellor would bring “visionary leadership” to the commission in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Ogundipe previously served as Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG between 2017 and 2022 — a period that placed him at the centre of key administrative and academic decisions in one of Nigeria’s most prominent universities.
A professor of Botany, his academic work spans molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation.
He holds a PhD in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from the University of Lagos.
Beyond UNILAG, he currently serves as Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, and is a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology.
He has also held leadership roles in scientific and academic bodies such as the Botanical Society of Nigeria and the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council.
With his appointment, attention now shifts to how his UNILAG experience will shape decisions at the national level — particularly in areas that directly affect students, from accreditation standards to the overall quality and stability of university education in Nigeria.
