Former England international James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, closing the chapter on a career that spanned more than two decades in the Premier League.
The 40-year-old midfielder, widely regarded for his versatility and consistency, leaves the game after spending his final three seasons at Brighton & Hove Albion, following the expiration of his contract.
Milner holds the record for the most appearances in Premier League history, a milestone that underscores his longevity and reliability across English football’s top flight.
His career began at Leeds United, before he went on to represent Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton. Across his Premier League journey, he made over 600 appearances and became one of the league’s most trusted utility players.
At Manchester City, Milner won two Premier League titles, before moving to Liverpool where he added another league crown and lifted the UEFA Champions League in 2019.
In a farewell message shared on social media, Milner reflected on his long journey in the game, highlighting both achievements and relationships built over the years.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups,” he said.
“But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”
Milner also represented England at major international tournaments, including two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups, earning respect for his professionalism, fitness, and leadership throughout his career.
His retirement marks the end of one of the Premier League’s most durable and consistent careers.
