There was celebration mixed with hope on Saturday as Abraham Seeds Private School International, in collaboration with the Pastor Abraham Olaluwoye Education Foundation, awarded full scholarships to 40 indigent pupils during its annual graduation ceremony in Mushin, Lagos.
The colourful event, held at Matanni Street, Onipan, was themed “Raising Hope; One Child At A Time” and drew parents, clerics, community leaders and government officials, who hailed the initiative as a lifeline for underprivileged children.
In his address, the school’s proprietor, Pastor Abraham Olaluwoye, said the scholarship scheme was inspired by his personal encounter with children who could not afford schooling.
“My experience with an out-of-school girl at Akute, who was working with a food vendor, stirred my passion for helping disadvantaged children. That encounter made me determined to provide opportunities for children whose parents struggle financially,” he said.
Olaluwoye explained that many parents in Mushin face serious financial difficulties, which informed the joint decision by the school and the foundation to support 40 pupils this year.
Commending the gesture, the Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Hon. John Bamidele, described it as a rare act of selflessness.
“Many people grew up in this community, but how many have looked back to give back? This is food for thought. I also pledge to contribute a percentage of my salary to the scholarship scheme,” he said, urging the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously.
The Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye LCDA, Hon. Ogunyemi Taiwo, also praised the initiative, encouraging pupils to make the most of the opportunity.
In a surprise intervention, Ambassador Bunmi Obakoya, through her foundation, pledged to sponsor four SS3 graduates of the school through university.
“We must collectively reject dropouts. The Bunmi Obakoya Foundation will support four students moving on to higher education,” she announced.
Other dignitaries, including Bishop Coker and Chief Adegbola, Chairman of Matamni CDA, lauded the school and the foundation for their contributions to the community.
The event featured awards, cultural displays and presentations, and ended with gratitude from parents and pupils who celebrated not only academic achievements but also renewed hope for Mushin’s underprivileged children.
