The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to commemorate Christmas Day and Boxing Day, as well as Thursday, January 1, 2026, for the New Year celebration.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajayi, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who spoke for the Federal Government.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm Christmas and New Year greetings to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, and to all Nigerians. He noted that the festive season offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the virtues of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice symbolized by the birth of Jesus Christ, stressing that these values are critical to promoting unity and harmony in the country.
The Minister urged Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic background, to use the season to pray for peace, security, and national progress, while supporting the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts toward development and cohesion.
He also called on citizens to celebrate responsibly, remain law-abiding and vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful holiday period.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
