At the centre of the lecture is a growing global concern—antimicrobial resistance—where common drugs are gradually becoming less effective against infections once easily treated.
Professor Oduyebo, a leading expert in Clinical Microbiology, Infection Prevention and Control, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Antimicrobial Stewardship, is expected to share insights from decades of research and practice.
Her academic journey reflects a long-standing commitment to medical science and public health.
Born on August 2, 1963, in Lagos State and originally from Sagamu in Ogun State, she began her education at St. Jude’s Primary School, Ebute-Metta, before proceeding to secondary schools in Lagos and Sagamu, and later Federal Government College, Odogbolu.
She went on to study Medicine at the University of Lagos, where she earned her MBBS and later a Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology.
Her professional training continued at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where she completed residency training and earned fellowships from both the West African College of Physicians and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 1998.
In 2021, she was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, and in 2022 became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath).
Professor Oduyebo joined UNILAG in 1998 as Lecturer I and rose to become Professor of Clinical Microbiology in 2015.
Beyond teaching and research, she has played active roles in public health responses, including Nigeria’s Ebola outbreak in 2014 and the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2021, particularly in infection control and prevention.
Her work also extends to hospital leadership and policy development. She serves as an Honorary Consultant at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where she chairs both the Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Control Programmes.
She has also contributed to international medical education, including a widely recognised systematic review on antibiotic use in bacterial vaginosis, later used on Medscape for continuing medical education.
Over the years, she has supervised more than 15 medical doctors in residency training, mentored MSc students, graduated a PhD candidate, and continues to supervise doctoral research.
Her academic output includes over 105
publications in Clinical Microbiology, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Antimicrobial Stewardship, with presentations at national and international conferences.
She also holds leadership positions in professional bodies, including Coordinator of the National Working Group on Antimicrobial Stewardship in Nigeria and Vice President of the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of Nigeria.
Beyond academia, she has helped develop an online training course on antimicrobial stewardship for Africa in collaboration with international partners.
The inaugural lecture adds to UNILAG’s tradition of public academic engagement, where scholars present research that connects classroom knowledge with real-world challenges.
