ILISHAN-REMO, Ogun State — Babcock University has launched a drone surveillance initiative in partnership with New Horizon to strengthen security on and around its campus amid growing security concerns across the country.
The newly introduced surveillance system extends monitoring up to a 30-kilometre radius beyond the university, enhancing the safety of students, staff, and neighbouring communities.
Speaking during the launch at the New Horizon complex on the university’s main campus, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, said the institution remains committed not only to academic excellence but also to the security and well-being of its community.
“Babcock is not only concerned about academics, but about character and security. Whilst we are watching after our own, we are also looking out for those around our community so that together, we can have an ecosystem where you close your eyes when you go to bed at night,” he said.
As part of the partnership, New Horizon donated a high-performance surveillance drone and a monitoring screen to the university. Ojewole disclosed that the university plans to procure two additional drones to widen surveillance coverage and improve emergency response.
He also revealed that discussions are ongoing to introduce practical training in drone technology, robotics, and related infrastructure into the university’s academic programmes to equip students with skills in emerging technologies.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of New Horizon, Tim Akano, described the initiative as another milestone in the organisations’ 22-year relationship.
“We are happy to donate this drone to Babcock University to create another layer of security architecture. We have been part of your journey for the past 22 years, and it has been a win-win relationship. This is another step to strengthen and cement our partnership permanently,” Akano said.
According to him, the drone is capable of flying up to 7,000 feet, providing clear night vision and real-time imaging to support rapid security response.
Beyond the equipment donation, the partnership includes training in drone operations, repairs, and maintenance to ensure long-term sustainability and build local expertise.
The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ilishan Police Division led by CSP Betty Ajuwon, members of the Ilishan Development Association, and officials of Babcock University, reflecting a collaborative effort to enhance security within the university and the host community.
