The Federal Government has inaugurated the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), marking a significant step toward ensuring the full implementation of the pact and sustaining industrial harmony in the nation’s university system.
The committee was inaugurated in Abuja by the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, who described the move as a major milestone in consolidating stability across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
According to the minister, the committee is tasked with ensuring the timely and transparent implementation of all provisions contained in the agreement, while monitoring compliance with agreed timelines and deliverables. She added that the committee would also facilitate engagement among relevant stakeholders.
Prof. Ahmad noted that the successful conclusion of negotiations between the Federal Government and ASUU reflects the commitment of both parties to dialogue, mutual respect, and sustainable reforms within the university system.
Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abel O. Enitan, described the inauguration as an important step toward strengthening governance and accountability mechanisms in the education sector. He urged members of the committee to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism and objectivity.
Chairman of the committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, assured stakeholders of the committee’s commitment to diligence and transparency in carrying out its mandate.
Also speaking, ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, called for sustained engagement between the government and the union, stressing the importance of regular meetings to address issues affecting the university system.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to the full implementation of the agreement and the promotion of lasting industrial peace across Nigerian universities.
