The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Hon. Justice Nyawo Finda Matturi Jones, fondly known as Aunty Nyawo, to express sympathy and solidarity following her passing.
The visit, held at Clark Street in Juba was led by the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, and attended by the Deputy Minister, the Permanent Secretary, Chief and Deputy Chief Technical and Higher Education Officers, senior officials, and staff of the Ministry.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Wurie paid tribute to the late Chancellor of Kono University of Science and Technology (KUST), describing her as an exceptional leader, trailblazer, and mentor whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
The Minister noted that Justice Matturi Jones made history as the first female Chancellor in Sierra Leone’s public higher education sector, breaking barriers and setting a powerful example for women in leadership. She commended the late Chancellor’s dedication to the growth and development of KUST, particularly during its formative years.
“Despite the challenges of leading a newly established institution, she served with wisdom, grace, and unwavering commitment,” Dr. Wurie said, adding that Justice Matturi Jones was also a strong advocate for young women and emerging leaders.
Chief Technical and Higher Education Officer, Dr. Josephus Brimah, described the late Chancellor as a foundational pillar of KUST whose contributions to education and national development would never be forgotten. He assured the family of the Ministry’s continued prayers and support.
On behalf of the family, Sahrfili Leonus Matturi thanked the Ministry and other sympathizers for their support during the mourning period. He described the late Justice Matturi Jones as a pillar of strength whose passing has left a profound void within the family.
Robert Edward Sahrfillie Jones also expressed appreciation to MTHE and the KUST community for their financial, moral, and emotional support. He noted that the outpouring of love reflected the positive impact his mother had on countless lives through her compassion, leadership, and commitment to service.
He further highlighted her dedication to diversity, inclusion, and gender equality, encouraging others to continue advancing the values she championed throughout her life.
Deputy Chief Technical and Higher Education Officer, Sia Fasuluku, reaffirmed the Ministry’s solidarity with the bereaved family and outlined planned funeral activities in Kono District, including a formal procession, candlelight gathering, memorial events, thanksgiving service, and cultural celebrations in honour of the late Chancellor.
Meanwhile, KUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Tamba Jamiru, commended the Ministry for its continued support to the university. He noted that the leadership of the ministry has played a significant role in the institution’s progress and development.
Professor Jamiru also paid tribute to the late Chancellor, describing her as a visionary leader whose contributions helped shape the university. He expressed optimism for continued collaboration between the Ministry and KUST as efforts to advance higher education in Sierra Leone continue.
The Ministry concluded the visit by assuring the family of its continued support and prayers while honoring the life and legacy of Justice Nyawo Finda Matturi Jones, whose contributions to education, leadership, and national development will remain an enduring inspiration.
