The Liberian Ambassador to Nigeria, John Akel Ballout Jr., has expressed a strong commitment to fostering strategic ties with Babcock University, signalling a move beyond traditional diplomatic engagement toward deeper educational and economic collaboration.
The Ambassador made this known during a courtesy visit to the university’s President and Vice Chancellor, Afolarin Ojewole, where discussions centred on partnership opportunities and shared development goals.
Reflecting on historical ties, Ballout Jr. acknowledged Nigeria’s significant role during the Liberian Civil War, noting the country’s immense contribution to restoring peace in Liberia, particularly in terms of human and material resources.
Highlighting a new policy direction by the Liberian government, the Ambassador revealed that Nigeria would be the first country to benefit from fresh investment opportunities across key sectors, including oil and gas, mining, agriculture, and tourism. He also extended an invitation to Nigerian investors to participate in an upcoming investment forum scheduled to hold in Lagos, aimed at strengthening bilateral economic relations.
In his response, Professor Ojewole reaffirmed Babcock University’s readiness to build meaningful partnerships. He pointed to the longstanding relationship between the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Liberia’s government, expressing optimism about future collaborations in student exchange programmes, research initiatives, and academic development.
Ojewole further positioned the university as a hub for global education, emphasising its American-influenced curriculum and extensive international academic networks. He reiterated the institution’s ambition to become a top destination for international students seeking quality education.
The visit marks a significant step toward strengthening Liberia–Nigeria relations, opening new pathways for both educational advancement and economic cooperation.
