Two young Nigerians have secured a partnership with the Lagos State Government to develop a real-time digital platform for locating public toilets across the state.
The innovators, Adetokunbo Ogunnoiki, a 24-year-old Mathematics graduate of the University of Ibadan, and his partner, Ademola Gbadero, a Mechanical Engineering student, are behind the startup “LooPoint,” which leverages geo-mapping technology to help residents find clean and accessible restrooms in real time.
Their proposal gained attention after Ogunnoiki shared the idea on X (formerly Twitter), drawing a response from the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to improve sanitation and eliminate open defecation. Authorities recently disclosed that over 1,700 public toilets have been deployed across the state and urged businesses, including filling stations, banks, and eateries, to open their restrooms to the public.
According to Ogunnoiki, the challenge is not only the provision of toilets but ensuring they are easy to locate. The proposed platform will map existing facilities, provide live updates on availability, and include cleanliness ratings, directions, and estimated walking time.
The system will also feature a data dashboard for government use, offering insights into usage patterns, maintenance needs, and user feedback.
The duo, who previously developed a similar solution for students at the University of Ibadan, presented their proposal to state officials, highlighting how the upgraded platform could improve access to sanitation facilities across Lagos.
Officials say the initiative aligns with efforts to build a cleaner city while promoting innovation and youth-driven solutions to urban challenges.
