There is a new intervention for students who struggle to afford school fees in Akwa Ibom, opening up more chances to stay in school.
The Chairman of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Mr Alfred Charles, has announced a N100 million Trust Fund aimed at supporting indigent but academically bright students in the council.
Speaking during a media session at the council secretariat on Tuesday, Charles said the initiative is designed to create a dedicated funding pool for students who lack financial support.
“What the Trust Fund will do is to help cater for the educational needs of our students. With the Trust Fund, the council will have a specific fund to help students who do not have the privilege, but are brilliant in their education,” he said.
He added that the move aligns with the ARISE Agenda of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno.
Beyond the fund, the council is also expanding its scholarship scheme.
According to Charles, 53 students benefited from scholarships last year, with their tuition and textbooks fully covered.
Another 50 students are expected to be added by August, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 103 before the end of his administration.
The council has also invested in education infrastructure.
Charles revealed that a mini ICT centre at the secretariat has been upgraded into a fully equipped Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre, now housing 200 computers.
The facility has been accredited by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board after passing inspection.
Powered entirely by solar energy, the centre operates кругл the clock, providing uninterrupted access for students.
He noted that beyond serving as an examination venue, the centre has become a preparation hub where candidates practise ahead of CBT exams.
In addition, the chairman disclosed that the administration is constructing the Urua Ntakrok market in Ikot Ubo as part of efforts to boost local revenue.
The combination of funding support and learning infrastructure signals a growing focus on making education more accessible at the grassroots level.
