What could have turned into another tragic kidnapping story ended instead as a tale of timely intervention after the Ogun State Police Command rescued 18 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members whose vehicle broke down at night in a notorious crime-prone area of the state.
The rescue, which took place on June 30, has drawn public commendation from the General Manager of Fresh FM Lagos, Taiwo Akinsola, popularly known as Omobabaolowo Woli ni Ilasamaja.
In a letter of appreciation addressed to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, Akinsola praised the command for its swift response, describing the operation as one that prevented what could have become a national tragedy.
The letter, made available to journalists on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, revealed that the corps members became stranded after their vehicle developed a fault in an area widely known for kidnapping and other criminal activities.
According to Akinsola, the corps members quickly contacted the police after finding themselves in a vulnerable situation.
“The Corps Members were stranded at night at a notorious black spot in Ogun State after their vehicle broke down. The location is widely known as a hotspot for kidnappers and criminal activity. In that moment of fear and vulnerability, they called for help,” he said.
He explained that officers of the Ogun State Police Command responded without delay, secured the area and safely evacuated all 18 corps members to Ijebu Ode, where they were provided accommodation in a hotel for the night.
“We are deeply appreciative that the Ogun State Police Command, under CP Bode Ojajuni, responded promptly to the distress call. Your officers arrived without delay, secured the scene, and ensured the safe evacuation of all 18 Corps Members to Ijebu Ode and lodged them in a hotel.
“Their professionalism, courage and vigilance saved lives that night and prevented what could have been a tragic incident nationally,” Akinsola stated.
He described the rescue as an example of policing that extends beyond routine law enforcement.
“This act of service goes beyond duty. It demonstrates the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under your leadership to protect lives and property, even in the most dangerous hours. The Corps Members and their families are forever grateful,” he added.
Akinsola also commended the Divisional Police Officer and the patrol team involved in the operation, saying their prompt response had strengthened public confidence in the police.
“We commend you, the DPO of the division, and the patrol team who acted decisively. Your quick intervention has restored public confidence and shown that help is indeed available when needed,” he said.
He concluded by praying for the continued protection, strength and success of police personnel as they carry out their responsibilities across Ogun State.
