The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has emphasised the importance of play in children’s development and learning, calling on stakeholders to protect every child’s right to play as a key component of quality education.
The appeal was made during the commemoration of the International Day of Play held at the Board’s Multi-Purpose Hall in Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos.
The event, themed “Protect Play, Protect Childhood,” brought together teachers, education stakeholders, development partners and pupils to celebrate the role of play in enhancing learning and child development.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, described play as more than a recreational activity, noting that it is a vital tool for children’s cognitive, emotional and social growth.
According to him, play supports learning, promotes social interaction, enhances emotional well-being and strengthens cognitive development among children.
“Beyond recreation, play helps children build critical thinking, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills that prepare them for future success,” Shittu said.
He also commended the Lagos State Government for its continued investment in basic education, stressing that the administration remains committed to providing safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environments where children can thrive both academically and socially.
Shittu noted that LASUBEB continues to champion child-centred teaching methods that encourage creativity, curiosity and active participation in the classroom.
He described the International Day of Play as a reminder of society’s collective responsibility to uphold children’s rights and ensure they enjoy a balanced and enriching educational experience.
Also speaking, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Lagos, Celine Lafoucriere, stressed that play should never be regarded as a luxury or reward but as an essential part of childhood development.
She stated that every child deserves the opportunity to play regardless of circumstances such as overcrowded classrooms, conflict or other challenges.
“Play is fundamental to a child’s growth and development. When children play, their brains develop, helping them acquire critical life skills and build resilience,” she said.
The celebration featured interactive play sessions at St. Agnes Public Primary School, alongside creative activities and presentations showcasing the transformative impact of play on learning and overall child development.
Education stakeholders at the event reiterated the need for increased support for play-based learning initiatives as part of efforts to improve educational outcomes and promote the holistic development of children across Lagos State.
