In a bold move to modernise its digital infrastructure and improve student engagement, the Open University of Mauritius (OU) has officially launched three upgraded digital platforms: its new university website, the OU Portal—Student Information Management System (SIMS), and the OU Learn Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS).
The relaunch event, held in Réduit, was presided over by Dr. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, Mauritius’ Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research.
He commended the university’s leadership for aligning with global trends in blended learning and emphasized the importance of technology in shaping independent and resilient learners.
“With these revamped platforms, we aim to maintain continuous communication with students, curb dropout rates, and empower learners to take control of their education,” Dr. Sukon stated.
The new SIMS platform allows students to manage their academic activities independently—from course registration to accessing results—while the upgraded LMS facilitates real-time online lectures, interactive content delivery, and sustained engagement between lecturers and students.
Looking to the future, the Minister also highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in higher education. He expressed a desire for AI integration to help universities identify students’ strengths and weaknesses early, allowing for tailored support and a more personalised learning experience.
Dr. Sukon further outlined plans to internationalise Mauritian higher education, suggesting that with such technological advancements, local institutions like OU are well-positioned to attract learners globally and deliver a world-class education.
The revamped digital tools represent a major step in Mauritius’ commitment to educational innovation, inclusion, and global competitiveness.
